What do the handicap ratings on holes mean?

Every hole has a handicap rating of 1-18 listed on the scorecard and the sign at the hole. What does it mean and how does that relate to a golfer’s personal handicap?

The handicap ratings are established by a special team from the state association which rates the course. By looking at the topography, the hazards and their placement, the length of the holes and peculiar configurations such as ponds, lakes, rivers, ditches and dog legs, they establish the difficulty of the holes assigning the odd numbers to the front nine holes and the even numbers to the back nine holes. In some cases the finishing holes may be more difficult so the handicap may be shifted to an easier hole so that it comes into play more often in the match play situation. The differential between the players handicaps are determined. The person with the lowest handicap gets no strokes deducted from any hole score. If the differential of player # 2 is 2 that player would deduct a stroke from the hardest hole on both the front and back. If the differential with player #3 is 5 strokes, he would get 3 strokes deducted on the 3 handicap holes on the front and 2 off the hardest holes on the back, etc. In this manner every golfer can compete with another almost on an equal basis due to the handicap differential.
